Decentralized storage alternatives: Filecoin or Storj?
A storage buyer or operator should compare the service contract and operational burden before comparing network labels or token incentives.
Reviewed: 21 August 2026
We compare structures and decision criteria. We do not rank tokens, promise returns, or treat partner compensation as evidence of quality.
Filecoin
A research profile for decentralized storage infrastructure. Evaluate capacity commitments, retrieval demand, collateral, hardware, and operator obligations.
Open research profile →Storj
A research profile for distributed object storage. Evaluate node hardware, bandwidth, ingress and egress demand, payout rules, and data durability assumptions.
Open research profile →What to compare
Data requirement
Define whether the need is archival storage, object storage, frequent retrieval, backups, media delivery, or another workload. The right fit depends on access patterns and durability requirements.
Node model
Compare hardware, disk requirements, bandwidth, uptime, repair processes, data retention, and payout conditions. A node is an operational service, not a passive balance.
Retrieval and egress
Evaluate how data is retrieved, what users pay for, expected latency, egress costs, and what happens when data is unavailable or a provider exits.
Security and privacy
Check encryption, key management, access controls, redundancy, auditability, and responsibility boundaries. Decentralization does not automatically equal privacy or durability.
Commercial evidence
Look for real customer workflows, published documentation, service terms, and transparent pricing. Capacity listed on a dashboard is not the same as paid usage.
